May 26, 2004: Miscellaneous Graffiti

I used to be a graffiti snob. The only street art that I considered worthwhile was traditional graf- subway murals, well executed burners, and paste-ups of massive scale (like Revs/Cost in the early 1990s, or Shepard Fairey's body of work). The ephemeral and incidental graffiti just passed me by- especially tags, political messages, small stickers, and the like. In the last few years I've come to reconsider this view, and increasingly, I've found value in small scale graffiti. There is something so weird and alluring about finding a single message or drawing that doesn't exist anywhere else. While most of these artists are anonymous, I've been able to identify a few favorites: Swoon /Toyshop and Neckface in particular. [Related: previous Bluejake graffiti posts.]

I think I have that Jesus one in my backlog...on Wooster Street, right?
That last Swoon is a new one for me. And I like the ghosts in love, expecially the reflected textures you managed to capture.
Where does the food suck?
the food sucks at the restaurant between pino's and met food on 7th ave in park slope, apparently. and yep- jesus is in the house on wooster street.
the reason i don't go wild with this kind of graf is that other people, like the fotolog contributors, focus on it every day- and i hate being redundant.
De la Vega was always a nice change from the ubiquitous toy spatter as well.
The nice thing about not visiting many fotologs is that you don't know when you're being redundant.
On second thought, I'm not sure that's a nice thing.
yeah, but who is jim nachlin?
