July 23, 2004: Williamsburg 2

Williamsburg has that odd Wizard of Oz quality that Greenwich Village must have had fifty years ago. I think Matte Chi, who moved there last week, described it best in his recent post: "The novel experience of living amongst people of my own age and ilk is at once comforting and strangely startling. In a way it's as if they've selected all the alternateens on every college campus in America and transplanted them whole hog to an arbitrary patch of land.. and it seems like the transplant took."

sometimes these pictures require further study: take for instance the two small figures in the first shot- the girl, walking out of the frame to the right, the boy running around the corner. that's gold, baby, gold!
i like the contrast between the red building and the trees and field below in the 6th photo. i wonder what inspired the artist to do that on the building and what the building owner is thinking in keeping it there.
and where the hell is the gang from oz going? to the magical wizard that governs the subway?
great series of shots but 1 and 6 blow me away!
The graffiti on #6 is wicked awesome.
Just an idea, can you add a link to the bottom of each image, in case someone wants to send a link to an individual image? just a thought.
in most browsers (i use mozilla firefox) you can get the URL of the individual image by right clicking (or cntl-click on mac) and clicking "properties". that's how i get them.
but one of my dirty secrets is that i prefer people to look at the set of images as a set, b/c i usually put some thought into the sequence and combinations. for instance, i shot about 200 images of williamsburg for this 4 day set, and i'm posting 34. i do not post them in the order i shot, but instead, by combinations of color and form. my secret theme for today could be summed up as "graffiti and the color red"
i am a photographer and am photographing street art and graffiti- can you lead me to some sites in williamsburg and the new york area- thanks ron
