Grand Street 1

Grand Street runs approximately northeast from Brooklyn into Queens, starting a few blocks north of the Williamsburg Bridge. For the last few weeks I had been attempting to find the legendary "fourth bridge" over the Newtown Creek, but I had been too lazy to consult a map. So I sort of bushwacked my way up the streets running along side the creek, starting at Box Street under the Pulaski Bridge, up to the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge, and then out towards the Kosciusko Bridge. The Kos only carries traffic, and it's hugely elevated, so the last time I was down there I ended up in this interesting industrial valley under the bridge. I made it about halfway down Vandervoort Street before turning back. This time, I checked Mapquest and found the bridge- it's at the very end of Grand Street, so I made my way down there on my trusty one-speed bike. Along the way I made some side trips to get a sense of the surrounding area.

ha! i work on vandervoort! did you see the bp!?! damn, i love that bp.

Do you usually walk while you're shooting or ride a bike?

i usually ride the bike, then get off and shoot, and then get back on. i also shoot on skates, a lot, and often will just take the train and walk. i like to vary it up. i find that walking gives the best results, b/c you are moving slower and see more things. later in the month, i'm going to take a tour of astoria and steinway at night on foot.

you should take a tour of flatbush. i hear it's quite stunning.

How do you have time for all these tours?
