September 26, 2004: DUMBO 1

I love DUMBO- it's one of the few neighborhoods that I can return to photograph again and again. I've shot it at night, in the morning, and in these pictures, in the late afternoon. The neighborhood has an amazing visual culture- graffiti on the walls, crumbling factories, cobblestone streets, and above it all, the looming structures of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. I feel like you could probably create a photoblog that had nothing besides DUMBO and be fine for subject matter for two years.

Jake, these are outstanding. Your shots of this locale brings out an almost sad/sentimental charm to what might ordinarily be a cold and bleak landscape. Could they be called "post-industrial romantic" ? On the technical side, did you use the tilt/shift lens, (esp. in the last one)? Keep up the great work!
really really enjoyed these jake. the last one is great.
Can you please tell me what area DUMBO is in? Not being a New Yorker I am uninformed about DUMBO. Thanks alot.

gene: these were on the G5, as my Digital Rebel just got back from the shop. So point and shoot only- you can see some barrel distortion as well as convergence in some of these pix.
jeannie: DUMBO is down-under-the-manhattan-bridge-overpass, the area between the brooklyn and manhattan bridge landings on the brooklyn side.
hiya jake. #4 is real nice -- the angle and the light. Also, the cloud motion in #5 is tops.
