October 8, 2004: DUMBO 7 and Grafspotting

Spending so much time in DUMBO really got me thinking about graffiti. I used to think that I was a graffiti-collector, but the truth is that my apartment is too small to hold many canvases, and my favorite stuff is out there on the streets. It sort of dawned on me that I'm more of a graf-spotter, in the same way someone might be a trainspotter. I sort of keep my eyes wide open all the time, and when I see something I like, I take a picture- like the way trainspotters keep a record of the trains they see. Most of my grafspotting is done with the mobile phone camera, and posted to my Moblog (and now, my Flickr account)- even though I still sometimes use my big camera if I like something very much. I wonder if there is anyone else out there in New York who shares this grafspotting hobby with me- and if there is, whether they'd be interested in sharing their images with me. Maybe a bunch of us could get together and start posting our stuff to a group on Flickr- do you think that could work?

About five steps from where you took Photo 8 there was a great bit of graf that read "The End is Nigh!" I snapped it over the weekend... did you see it? It was pretty cool.
