Sylvan Terrace and Jumel Mansion

After walking through High Bridge Park last weekend, we ended up down by the Jumel Mansion on 160th Street. The mansion is beautiful- even if the light was (once again!) less than ideal. Afterwards, we walked down Sylvan Terrace to the A train station. I've always liked the little wooden houses on that block- tiny little doors and wonderful paint jobs.

I'm almost positive they filmed part of Bamboozled there, and I remember being struck by how out of place it looks in New York, let alone Harlem.

They are landmarked and the city paid for them to be uniformly restored. Any owner must contact the city to get the right color paints for the facades. Believe it or not I looked into buying one of these houses when they were for sale in 1999. It was 135,000. Today they are close to 500,000.

found your pics searching sylvan terrace. my son and I discovered it today. a true gem. your pics are great. thanks for posting them.
