November 5, 2004: Below Delancey 2

I am in Chicago- an impressive city, but one that in no way measures up to New York. For instance, there seems to be no graffiti here- the streets are strangely wide, clean, and barren. Garbage collection is on side streets- all the seedy detail that draws my eye seems to have been pushed somewhere else. When I leave New York, I miss it- I miss the visual culture, the chaotic sense of life that you feel on the streets. I'm not sure that exists anywhere else in the world.

I know what you mean, I went to boston last week and the sight of a city with so little people and clean streets look surreal to me, I couldn't put my finger on what's missing there, but "chaotic" seems like the right word.
jake, you need to get off michigan avenue and out of the loop. i cant take it when people stay there and then judge the city by that area. it'd be like going to nyc and staying on a 10 block stretch of 5th avenue, then saying "ny is all glitter and gold". chicago is a city of neighborhoods, visit one of them! :) see you later!
well, sidestreets are what happens when you have fires and such.
it's true- i'm going to check out wicker park and some of the more industrial areas- so hopefully things are a little more lively up there!
as a chicago resident, I'm sometimes saddened by the lack of graffiti. the mayor has a huge thing about keeping our city clean. which is great, sure, but it's too bad sometimes. I see these trucks everywhere with "Mayor Daley's Graffiti Busters" emblazoned all over the side.
Chicago is a far different city than NY, but it's a great city with it's own personality. The neighborhoods are the best places to get pictures. Can't wait for you to post "Chicago".

That's the "Shakespeare in the Parking Lot" lot! As I walked by a couple of hours ago a hipster couple asked me "Do you know how to get to the Lower East Side?" They were disappointed when I said they were already there, and said "No, the Lower East Side near the Williamsburg Bridge with all the cool bars and restaurants."
