Over the weekend I went down to Hyde Park, home of the University of Chicago and my old friend Garth. As the guy in charge of the Chicago Maroon, Garth seems to have gotten to know the area pretty well- I definitely got my money's worth on the tour. The neighborhood struck me as a strange combination of New Haven and Park Slope- lots of beautiful Gothic quads and turn of the century row houses, with a few of those cute Victorians thrown in. Hyde Park didn't really seem like it had a commercial center- there were a few street with a bunch of stores, but it felt pretty diffuse. Definitely a little different from what I expected to see on the South Side of Chicago!
