Chinese New Year 1

This time of year always finds me in Chinatown, ducking under police barricades to get good shots at the New Year's parade. My technique is pretty simple: I start at the beginning, with the parade participants, and strut confidently along with them. Today, I got grabbed by a cop about three blocks in and pushed back into the stands. I fought my way through the crowd down to East Broadway, and rejoined the parade. The entire time, I was shooting with the 85mm, which turns out to be great for this kind of assignment. Compare these shots to the stuff I took in 2004 or 2003, and I think you'll see a big improvement.

These are lovely. The first one is very National Geographic-like.

what an improvment it was

you are right. this year's photos are the best. sometimes getting the whole thing comes down to focusing on a small portion. with those colors, the up close photos are powerful.
