May 11, 2005: Playing Paparazzi at Jen Bekman Gallery

I went over to Jen Bekman Gallery to check out John Glassie's "Bicycles Locked to Poles" exhibit. Youngna and Eliot were booked, so I stuck around to shoot some party pictures for Jen. Shooting parties is tough work- you need to strike the right balance between lurking and waiting for shots, and getting right up in people's faces and taking what you need. There's also a lot of technical stuff- for instance, a good lens- I find that anything longer than a 50mm is too close for normal sized rooms, and anything wider than a 24mm is too wide. And then there is the flash- bouncing works well, but you need to throw in a diffuser to really get the full effect.

#3 is great.
and don't you worry, jake, you're great at getting in people's faces.
The photo through the window is a little disorienting at first. I like it!
I think I saw Glassie photographing an abandoned bike in the EV not too long ago. I wanted to compare notes but he was gone before I could catch up to him.
Thanks for doing a great job Jake!
My two faves:
The inside out photo and the one of my friend Peter walking into the frame while you were shooting the groovy girl with the aviator shades.
I haven't had a second to turn around since the opening, but hopefully I can post some images on Flickr and on the gallery blog tomorrow.
