October 19, 2005: Movie Extra or LES Resident?

Over the last week, the corner of Rivington and Clinton has slowly been turned into a piece of Haight-Ashbury in the 1960s. Lockhart has been following it all on Curbed:
Now, a reader tips us that the film is called Across the Universe, starring Rachel Wood, Eddie Izzard, and Bono. (Oh yes.) It's—brace yourself—a romantic musical featuring Beatles music, directed by Julie Taymor, which means it will be delightful to look at but ultimately incoherent. Naturally, we can hardly wait.
Anyway, today I went down to check out the completed set. They were filming and "Get Back" was blasting in the background while they rehearsed tracking shots. They really went all out with the set decoration-- about a dozen stores and buildings had been painted, and they had built tons of signage. The most interesting part, however, was trying to figure out who was an extra on the set, and who was just a neighborhood character hanging out-- a few people could have gone either way. And one question I couldn't get out of my head-- shouldn't they be filming this in San Francisco?

They were shooting a bit of it near my house! I took photos. You can check them out at www.flickr.com/photos/shahid/sets/1072473/ They brought down some retro buses and cars when they came.
The story's supposed to be based in Greenwich Village.
