July 22, 2006: Two Houses on 43rd Street

One day I was on the way out to the airport in a cab, and happened to glance out the window near the interchange between the LIE and the BQE-- I saw an area filled with small industrial buildings and scrapyards, and I was intrigued. This is somewhere east of Long Island City, wedged in between the Calvary and New Calvary cemeteries. A few weeks later, I went down there to check it out, and it turned out to be a very interesting spot-- think Gowanus meets Red Hook, but more hilly. The two houses, with their wonderfully manicured lawns, are literally surrounded by industrial buildings on all sides. The highway runs directly behind the lot that the houses sit on-- and yet still, someone has chosen to live there, and live there well. Amazing.
