November 27, 2006: Striations

Like most reformed nerds, I'm a math enthusiast-- right now I'm reading a good book on prime number theory. Last year I was interested in non-linear math-- so I read a bunch of stuff on Chaos Theory and fractals. Whenever I see fractal forms in nature, my brain lights up-- there is something about self-similarity and repetition on varying scales that really speaks to me. Here, I've photographed some striations in the sand on El Matador beach, in Malibu-- but it could just as easily have been the mouth of a river seen from an airplane, or something else of intermediate scale. To me, that seems beautiful and super-cool.
