December 2, 2006: A Shadow on Van Dyke Street

Today was one of those deceptively sunny New York winter days. The kind that makes you want to go for a bike ride to Red Hook, but two blocks from your apartment you're freezing your fingers off and thinking about turning around. Or at least, that's the kind of day it was for me. I didn't turn around-- even though the sun was blazing straight into my eyes all the way out to the Coffey Street pier, and I never really warmed up. I think my core temperature is still down about ten degrees. It was that bad. The ride didn't really improve after I got to Red Hook. The wind was blowing straight off the water, and besides this shot a couple of others I caught near the Columbia Street ballfields, it was pretty dull. Except for the five minutes when some stray dogs chased me through that spooky abandoned lot near Halleck Street-- that did get my heart beating. But not enough to actually warm me up. Screw December.
