December 4, 2006: Men in Cities

Actually, these men are in the same city-- New York, specifically, near Union Square, and down on the corner of Spring and Elizabeth. I paired them because they both have a pensive air-- like they're thinking about something. I think Louie is probably thinking "where are all the wild party girls I was promised?" The guy on the right is easier to pin down-- he's got that classic "why is that dude pointing a camera at me?" look. I see that a lot. What about me? Recently, when I'm out shooting, I've been trying to clear my head. To think about nothing-- to just shoot. A sort of walking meditation-- but instead of focusing on my breathing, I'm thinking about f-stops and apertures and ISOs, and the direction of the light. Sometimes I get songs stuck in my head and that disrupts the process, but it's been going surprisingly well. You probably can't reach nirvana through photography-- but it's not like I was making much progress in that direction doing anything else.
