December 15, 2006: Jace and Blek Le Rat on the Roof of 11 Spring

Bluejake has been quiet this week because I've been working so hard on the 11 Spring Street pix over at Streetsy-- click over there if you want to see them. But I did save this rooftop shot for Bluejake readers. It captures the tranquility up there-- it's been very quiet, with only a couple of artists coming up to do pieces. The view is great-- on a clear day you can see north to midtown and south to Wall Street. After shooting for a couple of hours in the building each day, I've been going up to the roof to chill out and think about the project. All in all, I feel good about how it turned out. Wooster Collective put an enormous amount of work into curating it, and the quality of the art speaks for itself. Despite the reservations most of us had about gentrification, exploitation of art by capital, inclusion and exclusion issues, and graffiti/streetart beef, things turned out fine. It's not that those issues ceased to exist-- just that they seem overshadowed by the positive aspects of the project. Especially the artists getting to meet one another, talk shop, and pay last respects to the building before it goes condo.
