January 3, 2007: A Lot on Rivington Street

This is the lot that remains after the demolition of a temple on Rivington Street-- the one that collapsed last year. I walk by this spot a lot on the way to the LES bars-- and there is something about the scene that always stops me in my tracks. I think that's because a view that is ordinarily hidden has temporarily been revealed. That, combined with the symmetry of the old tenements and that naked slice of sky-- that's what makes the shot.
Unrelated: Bluejake is getting off to an unusually slow start this year because I'm laid up with an insane cold. I literally haven't left the house in three days, and I'm producing an epic amount of snot. I keep telling Karen that it's a war-zone down here at my end of the couch, but she doesn't seem to be that amused-- possibly because I've left a thin layer of mucus on every conceivable surface in the apartment. We need a biohazard decontamination squad down here, stat!
