January 8, 2007: Two Men on Ludlow

After the smell-alert today, the city seemed to go a little bit dead. It's like all of the energy got sucked out in the first hours of the morning. With no news rolling in, there wasn't much to do at work, so Karen and I took a walk down to LES to check out the Essex Street Market. On the way, we passed the municipal lot on Ludlow, around the corner from my first real apartment. I still love that area.

Right around the corner there's a liquor store I've been trying to shoot for years. The problem is that there's a huge pole right outside the store, and it really screws up the shot. But take a look-- the picture is worth it just for the title: "As Old as Hills."

Jake, I love almost everything you publish but this picture has the "something" that Barthes talks about. Is it because the first man looks like a Magritte? or the way the orange netting arches away? the three primary colors in sign, post and net? it is special. I also appreciate your photographers' quotes page. Especially about not calling yourself a photographer/artist, but Artist. I have agonized over that a lot myself and it comes at a good moment.
