January 28, 2007: Idiotarod 2007

This morning, Youngna, Tien, JCN, and I went over to Brooklyn to catch the annual running of the Idiotarod. The location had been changed from McCarren Park in Williamsburg to the end of Franklin Avenue in Greenpoint, but it didn't matter-- police were swarming at both locations. They actually called in air support-- I've never seen a police chopper that close before. Before the race began, the Captain at the local precinct read a statement saying that the event didn't have a permit, so if anyone blocked traffic, they'd immediately be arrested. Then the race commenced-- it took about a block before the teams began filling the middle of the street, and traffic on Greenpoint Avenue was completely blocked five minutes later. Surprisingly, the police were pretty nice about it, and no one got cuffed-- not even after people started throwing jello, pudding, super-foul smelling fish-oil, and flour at each other. [Related: some more of my race pix are up at Flickr.]
