January 29, 2007: Auto Collision

Sometimes I go for weeks without having any deep thoughts. Take today, for instance. I had dinner plans in Park Slope, but finished my work early and found myself with a few hours to kill. I ended up walking into LES, taking the J train to Williamsburg, and then walking up Lee Avenue to Nostrand, from Nostrand to Atlantic, from Atlantic to Fifth Avenue, and then up to my parents' place. While I walked, I was looking for shots, and noticing little things about the neighborhoods, and how they blended into one another. Things like how the Jewish area abruptly trails off at Flushing Avenue, and how the streets closer to the train stations seem busier. Nothing startling-- and to tell the truth, I'm only putting this stuff into words now-- while I walk, it all stays pretty much at the level of sensation. Anyway, it's a pleasant feeling and makes for good walking-- but sadly, for poor captioning, because I don't have much to offer right now besides telling you where I walked and what I saw there. So let me do that: this is a shot of one of the auto-repair places along Atlantic, a few blocks west of Nostrand. It's a fairly barren stretch, and I was struck by the contrast of the brightly-painted buildings against the gray sky.
