Here's an obvious but useful piece of advice for night photography: if you go out closer to sunset, the sky will show up blue in the pictures, instead of black. That generally makes for a more pleasing image. This shot was taken earlier tonight, around 6 p.m.-- that's about forty minutes after sunset. The blue starts to run out after about an hour, so you've got to move fast.

I read that wrong. I was imagining you saying to your subject "we need to move back a mile or so, we need to get closer to the sunset, the sky is too dark here".
