March 5, 2007: Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom

Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom

Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom

After Hanoi we flew to Siem Reap, in the Northwest of Cambodia. That's the fastest-growing city in the country, due to its proximity to Angkor, the massive complex of ancient of Khmer temples. The roads out from the improbably-nice airport are fronted by massive five-star resorts-- and clogged with tourists in cabs and motorbike-rickshaws. As for the temples themselves, they are literally indescribable, and on a larger scale than anything I've ever seen before. So rather than butcher the experience with words, I'll just quote some Wittgenstein ("About that which one cannot speak, one must remain silent") and point you to this Wikipedia entry.

If you're interested in seeing more of Angkor, Steve McCurry's Sanctuary is the best book that I've seen.
