July 15, 2007: The 405 Freeway Near LAX

I enjoy taking pictures from planes, and I'd like to share a few tips. First: get a window seat several rows back from the wing. You want to be far enough back so that you don't see the wing blocking the view, but close enough to the engines to get some of that cool air distortion. Second: you generally only get good pictures at the very beginning and end of a flight, when you're close to the ground (exception: exceptionally clear days over the desert or farmland of the midwest.) Third: an SLR is critical here for focus, setting a good shutter speed (1/1000 or faster), etc. Finally, you need to correct everything fairly hard in Photoshop, because shooting from that high up gives everything a blue tinge. Anything else worth mentioning?

Great shot and some nice tips too! I also love taking photos out plane windows. Found a lot of inspiration from the book "Window Seat: The Art of Digital Photography & Creative Thinking" by Julieanne Kost.
this is very cool! was this a trip trip? or you actually managed to get some sort of deal to go shotting?
great photo!!! these cars look like little matchboxes for boys! ;O) Thanks for sharing with people! greetings!
I thought I had it bad living on a semi-busy street. I'm curious how effective those sound walls are.
