August 20, 2007: Sam on Top of the Chelsea Hotel

Sam on Top of the Chelsea Hotel

On Friday, Jen Carlson invited me to tag along with her for an interview with John Vanderslice on the roof of the Chelsea Hotel. Sam came too, and together we explored the place. It was pretty nutty-- the apartments on the top floor have all been built out and up-- each one looks like a Cape Cod style house 15 floors above 23rd Street. The rest of the roof is composed of split level gardens and turrets, with brick everywhere and dense gardens. As John sang in the background, and the sun set, the whole place just felt surreal and otherwordly. I'm sure there are hundreds of places like this in New York-- hidden in plain sight.

i'm jealous of pretty much every word you just wrote. yep.

I'm so tired of reading about casualties of new* New York greed. Yet another landmark, soaked in historical significance, soon to go the way of the glass and steel.
