October 3, 2007: Strangers

I think that my fear of photographing strangers goes back to childhood. Like many twins, Molly and I shared a secret language when we were younger. Since by nature she's an extrovert, and I'm an introvert, when we reached school age I found it easiest to speak through her to other people. That went on for a good long time-- in fact, today, at age 31, I still find it painful to talk to people I don't know. At restaurants, I usually have Karen order for me-- and when travelling in foreign countries, I make her ask for directions. So it's not surprising that I hate asking strangers for permission to photograph them-- and it's not something that seems to be changing much over time.

These are great street photos. The the woman opening the door is very magnetic - draws you into the scene. I have the same problem - noticed one day that most of my people pics are the backs of necks and half profiles except of my sons who tend to look slightly annoyed in my pics, can't imagine why. Keep working on it Jake, you do people good!
