October 7, 2007: Pike Slip at Dusk

When I'm too tired to bike over to Brooklyn, I ride around the Battery. I've been taking this ride for five years, and in that time, I've seen a lot of change-- but only along the West Side of the island. There, Battery Park City, the West Side greenway, and the Staten Island Ferry terminal have all been transformed. But on the East Side, below and beside the FDR, things are largely the same-- huge projects and fenced-off industrial buildings, a few elderly people and bums sitting on the benches facing the East River. Of course, I love it, and don't ever want it to change.
