March 20, 2008: Scrap

Nate and I went up to Queens on Saturday and found a couple of cool spots. The first one was in Long Island City, right behind the Budweiser plant. It's a massive sandlot that rises to 75' cliffs along the East River-- someone had set up a little picnic area, complete with chairs, tables, and a swing. Afterwards, we drove up towards Astoria, where we found this abandoned marble plant. It also abutted the river-- and had a real end-of-the-world kind of feel. Stacks of scrap ten feet tall littered the lot, and a woman who was there rounding up stray cats told us that a group of homeless people had set up a camp in back. Related: two shots.
