April 27, 2008: At the Edge of Dead Horse Bay

At the Edge of Dead Horse Bay

While exploring Dead Horse Bay, we came across an enormous profusion of trash-- wrecks of abandoned ships, cars decayed down to their axles, ten thousand spray paint cans, broken glass patent medicine bottles, a severed doll's arm. It was that kind of place. An older woman was working alone under the Belt Parkway overpass, gathering some of the trash into bags. She'd have an easier time emptying the bay with an empty soda can. There were tons of those lying around, too.
