It's worth remembering that even in these years, when shitty ten and fifteen story buildings are springing up like weeds all over the Lower East Side, that there are plenty of people in the neighborhood who still wash their clothes in the sink, and hang them to dry on clotheslines on the roof. I took this shot from the roof of a tenement-- one of five or six that line the block. Of course, three have already been converted to luxury housing, and judging from the expensive cafes and bars lining Orchard Street, this one doesn't have very long left.
